Encinal Midwinter, Race 1 at TI - Encinal | November 19 |

Jack Frost#1
The first day of the Encinal YC Jack Frost series was sailed with 7 Santana 22s in light and shifty conditions with plenty of sunshine. After a postponement to wait for the wind to fill in, the first race was sailed on a shifty southerly. After the start, the fleet split to find more wind to the right, or a gigantic lift to the left. Kristy Lugert on “Kitten” went left and came out the best, leading the way to the top mark. We foolishly decided to tack out of her dirty air into that of an Olson 25, and lost our second position. “Bonito” passed us and Jan on “Carlos” sneaked in from the far right, where he had apparently found some good pressure. On the way to the finish Kristy held it together to finish first, Congratulations! “Carlos” came in second and we managed to pass “Bonito” to finish in third. Yes, you read that correctly, we passed “Bonito”!!! The second race saw a bit more wind, again with shifts of 10-20°. We came out of the start clean and played the right where there seemed to be more wind. We rounded the top mark first, which gave cause for some concern, since none of us had paid attention to the course pennant. We assumed (and hoped and prayed) it would be the same as for the other fleets, course 2. When we set up for the bottom mark I saw “Carlos” getting ready to round as well, pfieuw! We managed to hold it together and not hit any marks and sailed a clean upwind and downwind leg to finish first. On the last leg “Bonito” and “Carlos” started luffing each other out, allowing “Pariah” to pass them to finish second. Lots of fun in these gentle winter conditions! Thanks to Michael Andrews and EYC for organizing! Thijs, Keay and Anna Byte Size, #801 |
