Thanks Greg. As a long time dinghy sailor [Lasers, Holders, etc.] using the controls to shape and de-power the main makes sense, and I appreciate the input. Yet, I would still think there would be times to reef – for safety’s sake if nothing else. So I still pose my question to the group – how about this way: When have you had to reef? Sincerely, Tom B. - #329

:: Hi Tom,
::
:: When I (being new to the fleet) asked that same question
:: of some of the veterans at March's fleet meeting, the
:: answer I received was "we don't."
::
:: Instead, they said the use the various rigging
:: adjustments (cunningham, backstay, mainsail flattener)
:: to depower the sails, and if it is really honking, a
:: little hiking doesn't hurt either.
::
:: But I'm just a blind man reporting what a sighted person
:: told me. I'm sure better experts than I will weigh in
:: here...

:: #491 as-yet-unnamed (but I am still liking 'Your Ad
:: Here')
::
:: :: I know there are not any real steadfast rules, yet
:: :: considering a 110% headsail, at what wind speeds would
:: :: you Bay sailors consider putting a reef in the main?
::
:: :: Any ideas are appreciated…
::
:: :: Thanks,
::
