Most people have the hull number as the sail number though there are exceptions. I have a used pair of sails with 341 on them from a racer in Santa Cruz, no "s". This is not my hull number, as I have no idea as to what it actually is. Some boats have opted to forgo this problem and have four digit numbers on their new sails. If you know your hull number, I suggest being proud and going with that. By the way, how did you find it out from dmv? My hull is also painted over many times. I like the "S" personally as it makes the model and class when racing easier to recognize.
