:: One problem I had is that the backstay intefered with
:: the Hoist Boom.
::
:: If my mast was 10 ft taller it would not be a problem .
:: The hoist boom would just operate under the backstay,
:: But with the mast height of a S22, picking up the boat
:: out of the water requires the hoist boom to be higher
:: than the backstay, but dropping it on to the trailer
:: requires the hoist boom to be under the backstay.
::
:: Should the backstay be released during the hoist ?
:: Is that safe?
Its done a couple of ways at the hoist in Alameda. One is to throw a line over the spreaders and run them back to a block and winch/cleat, remove the backstay, plop the boom on the leward side and hoist away. It can also help to let the mast go forward a tad past vertical so that you don't whack your windex. Another is to leave the backstay on and hoist with a slight lean so the mast clears the hoist. Doesn't take much, 5 to 10 degrees at most. I've seen and helped both ways many times with no ill affects. Your mileage may vary Tom #664 Fun Zone

:: I sort of shimmied the backstay around the hoist boom by
:: rocking the boat. But I find that approach a little too
:: exciting.
