:: :: The throttle on 30 year old Johnson Seahorse 6hp broke
:: :: this weekend and Iso now 'm debating getting a new
:: :: outboard. A new 6hp is a little above my price range and
:: :: I'm wondering if I need that much horse power. Any
:: :: suggestions in the 2 hp to 6hp range?

:: We sail in the same waters and I personaly think
:: anything less than 5 hp is not enough if your bucking a
:: good tide or lots of bay chop and wind. 2 strokes are
:: much lighter, expect to pay about $100 per hp for a good
:: used turn-key engine.

I have "down sized" from a four horse power Mercury to a 3.5 horse power model (both four stroke). The four was the smallest displacement version of one type and the 3.5 is the largest of another. The 3.5 just manages to move the boat adequately in my opinion, the four was better at it but, the weight saved and far easier resulting deployment and removal off of the transom make the power loss / sacrifice worth while.
