Don't think I can really answer on the stretch issue, I've heard that you want less stretch on things such as jib sheets but you can tolerate more on main sheets. Whatever that means I have no idea. As a general rule you want to stay pretty light on the jib/spinniker sheets so we are not a fan of shackles on those, other places they are fine. I'm probably going to get new halyards and sheets made up soon so if you send me an email I'll fill you in.

I'm also going to replace some of my jam cleats so if you like I can send you stuff that's left over.

Are you going to keep the boat in Monterey? Either way I hope you consider supporting fleet 1 since it's such a great resource.

:: Thanks for the congratulations! While the boat isn't
:: staying free, I think I'll be able to get her in fairly
:: good condition for much less than it would have cost to
:: buy a Santana that would still need fixing up. I'll look
:: into those sources for lines, but in your opinion what
:: amount of stretch is acceptable on such a small boat?
:: Also, do you use shackles on the sheets or just tie them
:: off?
::
:: All 4 winches are there (2 cabin top, 2 primary), but
:: they don't have any cam cleats. Also, the rudder has
:: loosened up considerably after I scrubbed the barnacles
:: off the hull near the rudder, sprayed it with PB Blaster
:: and McLube, sailed it from Santa Cruz to Monterey (I was
:: borrowing a trailer that was in Monterey and it was a
:: nice shake down sail) and then found a grease nipple on
:: the rudder shaft.
::
:: :: Congratulations on the new boat. As my partner in bad
:: :: boat ideas always says the most expensive car/boat
:: :: you'll ever own is the free one. As for sheets and guys
:: :: I think your best bet is to ask at the rigging shop in
:: :: Svendson's or West Marine. Layline has a pretty good
:: :: printed catalog (the web site is not much to write
:: :: about) with lots of info & tips but I get the feeling
:: :: they are a bit on the pricey side although I have not
:: :: done any real comparisons.
:: ::
:: :: As for spinnaker gear we've always used the normal or
:: :: nothing special setup. A couple of lines for the
:: :: guy/sheet which we ran them from the stern blocks up to
:: :: the jib winches which were on the cabin top of my boat.
:: :: Sounds from your description that someone may have
:: :: removed your jib winches which usual sit ontop of the
:: :: 'bent pieces of metal'.
:: ::
:: :: As for the rudder being tight I would reccomend removal
:: :: and cleaning at your next haul out. Penetrant may be
:: :: harmful to surrounding plastic or plastic bearings that
:: :: may have been used. Most owners have problems with the
:: :: rudder being too loose so it sounds like your doing
:: :: pretty good.
:: ::
:: :: :: I was given a free Santana 22 by someone who needed to
:: :: :: free up their slip and I was hoping to find some advice
:: :: :: and parts here. She's actually in fairly good condition,
:: :: :: but missing some stuff. Could someone please give me
:: :: :: some suggestions on line type and length/diameter for
:: :: :: the jib sheets, spinnaker sheets/guys, and how to rig
:: :: :: the spinnaker gear (tweakers or seperate guys)? Also,
:: :: :: there is nothing to cleat the sheets off too, do you
:: :: :: suggest getting the bent metal pieces with the cam
:: :: :: cleats of figuring out a different way? Another issue is
:: :: :: that the rudder bushing feels very stiff, is this a
:: :: :: common issue that needs to be fixed of will it loosen
:: :: :: with some use and penetrating oil? Lastly, the boat only
:: :: :: has a main and jib (not sure it it's OD or PHRF), does
:: :: :: anyone have an old spinnaker and pole they might be
:: :: :: willing to give away or sell?
:: :: ::
:: :: :: Thanks,
:: ::
:: :: :: James
:: ::
