Subject: Interior Rot: How crazy to go?

I had to replace my bulkheads a couple of years ago. Not having the time for potentially open-ended boat projects I had SF Boat Works do it at the same time as a bottom job. I'm totally happy but it may be more than you want to pay vs. doing it yourself.

:: Brutal, it is a big job but very doable. I would
:: recommend the book by Casey, "Good Old Boat". It is an
:: excellent book to guide through the process. I did a
:: reinforcement of my bulkheads that I was pleased with,
:: but it sounds like your bulkheads are too far gone.
::
:: Tom Montoya did a complete removal and rebuild of his
:: interior, maybe you could reach out to him through this
:: site. I guess my concern would be the condition of the
:: rest of the boat. If everything else is good, then the
:: interior refit would be worth it, if not.....
::
:: Tabbing in new bulkheads is not difficult, especially if
:: you can remove the old ones intact as cutting guides for
:: new material.

::
:: :: Recently hauled out my boat so that I could do a bottom
:: :: job and other repairs that I had been putting off until
:: :: I could get it out of the water.
:: ::
:: :: Noticed that some pre-existing decay (there when I
:: :: bought the boat two years ago) in the bulkhead where the
:: :: chainplates bolt in had gotten worse, to the point where
:: :: I can drive a skinny pick through the worst of it when I
:: :: push hard enough.
:: ::
:: :: Looks now like I'm going to have to replace those
:: :: bulkheads. As I poked around a bit, it looks as if the
:: :: rot has affected almost every board inside the boat.
:: ::
:: :: I'm contemplating completely replacing the interior with
:: :: new wood. Is this worth doing? Note that this would be
:: :: my first project on the boat that would actually require
:: :: cutting things out and glassing them in. I have some
:: :: experience with fiberglass from when I was a kid, but
:: :: not too much. Looking forward to hearing your advice.
