Short shafts won't work, I tried. However, I have been told that several of the electrics are lighter.

Big question is where will you be sailing? How far from port will you be sailing? Open Ocean or on a lake? Most of the Monterey Racers swear by the 2hp 2stroke motors as they are light. I actually looked at a electric saltwater trolling motor with a high torque prop. That had been used on a 23ft sailboat. But figured out the less than 2hp eqivalent motor might not have the push for Monterey Bay waters. I also did not have an easy way to recharge the batteries.

If you are sailing San Francisco Bay, based on my reading this forum, I would look at a newer lighter 6hp. If you are thinking of sailing outside the Golden Gate, I would make sure you can use an external fuel tank.

This is based on the experiences of other sailors, not on my first had knowledge.
