There are two things I find to be of enormous help when single handing. The first is a block at the bow allowing me to run a line to the head of the jib. I usually run the line through a couple of small carabiners between the hanks ( they don't have to be strong, can be just a cheap keychain type, to keep the line free and running up the forestay to the head of the sail.) and back to the cockpit. With this I can keep the jib locked down on the deck when heading out (release the downhaul and raise the jib) and pull it down when coming back in. I tried a thing called a Gerr Downhaul and it didn't work for me at all. Just something to get the jib down is a huge help.

The other thing is know how to "Heave To". If I am just out and bashing around, I will heave to to reef. Makes it easy and calm. Granted you need to have sea room. I concur with the previous post about choosing a light wind day to practice and planning things out.

My Two Cents,
