I acquired a 1966 Santana 22 last year and have been learning to sail with my 17 year old son in the Oakland Estuary. We are at a point now that we know enough to realize really how much we need to learn.

We noticed another Santana 22 zipping along faster than us in moderately light winds who had a very different and newer sail set up. Our main challenge is getting speed up-wind in lighter winds, My question is, besides continuing to become better sailors and learning how to better trim, etc. where would we get our most bang for our buck as we upgrade? The bottom needs painting (we get it cleaned now every 4-6 weeks) and the sails are old.

Any advice appreciated!
