Subject: Why NOT put zincs on keel?
Info: (4489 views) Posted: Wednesday 5-23-18 11:08:29 AM

A bit late now, but..... the Santana keels were, as far as I know, fairly rough affairs. They,re cast iron, and most of them even have a huge void on one side from where it cooled and contracted. They certainly weren’t fair, smooth or even. The pitting on the keel has probably been there since the day it was born. All the boats I know of have since been faired and completely encased with filler and lots of epoxy, so electrolysis shouldn’t be a problem.

But if your keel is exposed, and you keep the boat in the water with the electrics hooked up, zincs sound like a pretty sensible idea!

:: Any reason one would NOT want to put zincs on the keel
:: of a Santana 22? Recently fixed a ton of pitting on the
:: keel and would rather not have to do that in another few
:: years. Zincs seem like an easy solution. Only reason for
:: why I wouldn't want to do this would be to not add the
:: drag which zincs would introduce.
